Every year, an overwhelming 160-170 lakh tons of solid waste is generated. When this waste is not managed properly, it doesn’t just damage the landscape—it costs human lives. Taking active steps to control waste is essential for a sustainable and healthy future.
The Impact of Mismanaged Waste
The consequences of failing to collect and treat waste are devastating:
- Disease & Mortality: Between 400,000 and 1 million deaths occur annually in the Global South due to diseases linked to uncollected waste.
- Air Quality: The open burning of waste is a major health hazard, leading to 270,000 premature deaths every year.
Key Strategies for Waste Control
Currently, only 50% of waste is treated. To close this gap and protect our communities, we must adopt these four pillars of waste management:
1. Recycle & Reuse
Reducing the demand for new raw materials is the first line of defense. By recycling paper, plastic, and glass, and finding new uses for old items, we can significantly decrease the volume of trash sent to landfills.
2. Compost Organic Waste
A large portion of solid waste is organic. Instead of letting it rot and produce harmful gases, composting turns kitchen and garden waste into nutrient-rich soil, effectively “closing the loop” on organic consumption.
3. Promote Cleanup Drives
Community action is vital. Organizing and participating in cleanup drives helps remove existing pollution from our environment and raises awareness about the importance of keeping our surroundings clean.
4. Support Professional Waste Treatment
We must advocate for and utilize systems that ensure a higher percentage of waste is treated professionally, preventing it from ending up in open dumps or being burned.
